The Facility
- The Lower School Library offers USM elementary students
a stimulating and unique environment. With a puppet theater, stage,
formal and informal seating, story area, online catalog and Internet
access the library is set up to involve children in literature and research.
The Collection
- Students have access to over 22,000 titles from a
collection that supports the Lower School curriculum and recreational
reading. A shared networked catalog, with the other division libraries,
makes over 49,000 titles available as well as access to online encyclopedias
and magazine data-bases. These resources can be accessed in the library,
in classrooms, and at home.
The Library/Media Program
- Curriculum integrated instruction in Information Literacy
is provided on a weekly basis by a certified Instructional Library Media
Specialist. Skills in locating, using, presenting and evaluating information
are taught along with information ethics and literature appreciation.
Teachers and the media specialist plan additional library experiences
for students including research, multimedia productions, speakers, author
visits, storytelling, and drama.
